Undercoat

A coating, generally pigmented, that is applied to the surface after preparation and before the application of a finish coat.

The undercoat provides improved adhesion and/or maximised uniformity and gloss of a finish coat when used on bare wood or metal.

For unpainted surfaces, it is the coat between the primer and the topcoat. For previously coated surfaces, the undercoat is applied directly to the old paint.
