Shim

A shingle or small piece of scrap lumber, usually wedge shaped, which when forced behind a framing member or furring strip, pushes it into position. Metal shims are made of thin sheet metal, and used to fill gaps in wood framing members, especially at bearing point locations.

Shims are also used when installing doors and are placed between the door jamb legs and door trimmers.
