Primer

The first or base coat of paint applied to a surface, typically to provide adequate adhesion between the surface and subsequent topcoats. Most primers contain some pigment, some inhibit corrosion of the substrate, some lend uniformity to the topcoat, and some prevent the discoloration of the topcoat. Primer can be latex or alkyd (oil) paint.
