Cesspool

An underground watertight chamber in which sewage effluent is collected from waste and soil pipes. In some cases, an outlet is provided from the cesspool to allow soakage into surrounding ground. Otherwise, it must be emptied at regular intervals, a service usually provided by the Local Authority for which a charge is made.
