Backing

A term that is used to describe frame lumber that is installed between wall studs to provide additional support for plasterboard or an interior trim related item, such as cabinets, handrail brackets, and towel bars.

Installing backing means that items can be screwed and mounted into solid wood rather than weak plasterboard that may allow the item to break loose from the wall.
